1. Lempuyang Temple

The first tourist destination that must be visited on the list is Lempuyang Temple.
Lempuyang Temple is not only popular for its religious reasons but also for the extraordinary beauty it offers.

This holy temple is located on the top of Bisbis hill, a peak part of Mount Lempuyang. From this temple, you can easily see the panorama of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali. That's how Lempuyang Temple got the nickname "Gate of Heaven".

When visiting Lempuyang Temple, make sure you take a photo of yourself right between the gates. To get the best photos, you can use a trick popular with tourists. Those who come to the shrine often ask the staff there to use a small mirror placed under the lens to take photos. Then, a water reflection effect will appear in the image.

Visiting Lempuyang Temple, it is important to prepare your stamina. Access is a little hike up to the temple yard. You are allowed to climb the stairs to reach the main gate of the temple. You will see amazing dragon statues guarding both sides of the stairs.

You need to know that Lempuyang Temple is a holy place for Balinese Hindus. For this reason, every tourist who comes to the temple is required to wear a scarf and sarong, traditional Balinese cloth used to cover the waist to the ankles.

2. Lahangan Sweet Photo Spots

Standing at the peak of the viewpoint, you will find a lot of places for great pictures. If you need something to eat, there is a small food stall found at the peak of the viewpoint. There, you can taste Balinese cuisine which is well-known for its rich flavor.

From this popular viewpoint, Lempuyang Temple and the famous Tirta Gangga are just within a short distance. To get the best out of your visit to Lahangan Sweet, you can stay in the Amlapura for a couple of days. The reason is that it is much closer and easier for you to reach of most popular tourist destinations in Karangasem from Amlapura.

3. Tirta Ganga

Tirta Ganga or “Water of the Ganges” should be on the top list of your Bali holiday plan. It is a beautiful former royal palace located in Karangasem, eastern Bali. The name of the palace is taken from the river Ganges in India and is sacred by Hindu people there.

Today, Tirta Gangga is turned into a gorgeous open water garden sanctuary that becomes the favorite of most tourists in Bali. This tourist spot is about 1.2 hectares wide. It comes with three main attractions. They are the bathing pools, water palace, and Patirthan Temple.

As a bonus, you can see the breathtaking views of the eastern highlands of Bali, including Mount Agung. Going around the former royal palace, you will find out that green rice paddies cover the ground. Not only that but there is a lush green forest that surrounds the palace’s water gardens.

4. Taman Ujung

Make sure that you also visit Taman Ujung on your next trip to Ubud, Bali. While locals often call it “Taman Ujung Sukasada”, international travelers call the tourist destination “Taman Ujung Floating Palace”. Due to its exceptional beauty, Taman Ujung is often used as a location for a pre-wedding photoshoot.

Being established in 1919 by the former king of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, Taman Ujung comes with a perfect combination of European and Balinese architecture. This blended architecture can be seen on the 3 large ponds that become the main attraction of the water palace. These ponds are connected by elegant and long pathways.

The whole water palace lies on about 10 hectares of land. Initially, there was a single existing pool named “Kolam Dirah” in Taman Ujung Sukasada. This large pool wasn’t made for royal bathing. Instead, the king of Karangasem used the pool to punish those who practiced Pangiwa or LEAK. They are kinds of black magic or Balinese witchcraft that sacrificed human beings.

Then, some other pools and resting pavilions are added to the area. There were also places where the king meditated. Among these additions, Taman Gili floating pavilions are perhaps the most attractive ones. With these beautiful additions, the king shifted the purpose of Taman Ujung and made it a retreat place. It also turned into a place where the king welcome and entertained foreign dignitaries who visited the Karangasem Kingdom.

The opening hours of Taman Ujung Sukasada are 7 am to 7 pm. Meanwhile, the best time to visit the water palace is about 7 am. This is the time when the place is less crowded and the sunlight isn’t too hot. In this way, you will find it easy to take pictures of the jaw-dropping views offered. To reach Taman Ujung Sukasada, you can rent a scooter. If you go with your family, renting a car with a driver can be a better option to take.
