It is said in history that the man who founded Besakih was an Indian Hindu priest who had lived for a long time in Java, whose name was Rsi Markandeya.

It is said that after meditating on Mount Dieng he received a revelation from the Almighty / God to establish a holy place on the island of Bali by planting holy jugs, which contained the Gems and Panca Datu (five precious metals) in the southwest of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali as the basic construction of holy sites.

The place where he planted the holy jar was called Basuki which meant to survive. It was named Basuki, because of the success of Rsi Markandeya and his followers in carrying out their duties of establishing a holy place. Over time, the name Basuki changed to Besakih until now.
