Bali is known as the island of a thousand temples, but have you ever asked, which is the biggest temple in Bali? The biggest temple in Bali is the Besakih Temple complex.

Besakih Temple is located in Besakih Village, Rendang District, Karangasem Regency, Bali, Indonesia. It is also called the mother temple because, in this temple area, there is a main temple called Pura Penataran Agung, Pura Besukihan, and 17 accompanying temples.

Pura Penataran Agung is the largest temple, the holiest area, and is the center of all temples and ritual activities in the Besakih Temple complex.

At Penataran Agung Temple there are 3 Linggas, the sacred altars of Dewa Tri Murti or the 3 main gods in Hinduism, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who are symbols of the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer.

The History of Besakih Temple

According to history, Besakih Temple was founded by an Indian Hindu priest named Rsi Markandeya, who had lived in Java for a long time.

After meditating on Mount Dieng, he received a revelation from God to establish a holy place on the island of Bali. He planted holy jugs containing gems and Panca Datu (five precious metals) in the southwest of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali, as the foundation of the holy site.

The place where he planted the holy jar was called Basuki, which means "to survive." It was named Basuki because of the success of Rsi Markandeya and his followers in establishing the holy place. Over time, the name Basuki changed to Besakih, which is its current name.

Besakih temple entrance fee: Rp150.000/person including sarong, local guide, and one-time settle bus.
